Integumentary System Form and Function
Micro
Cells
keratinocyte: cell that produces keratin(makes skin water resistant), makes hair
melanocyte: produces melanin (gives skin color)
Langerhans' cell: macrophage
Merkel cell: sensory cell( nerve endings)
Keritnaized Stratified Squamous Epithelial: layered for skin abrasion and pathogen protection. Keretanized dead cells on top for abrasion. alive cells with nerves would hurt.
Desmosomes
interlocking cellular bridges for communication
glands
sebaceous glands: secret sebum
sudoriferous glands: sweat glands, regulate body temperature
Eccrine gland: release sweat for temperature regulation
Apocrine gland: thicker sweat after puberty(sexual scent)
ceruminous gland
Macro
Epidermis
Stratum Corneum: Keritanized cells, protects underlying tissue, form nails
Stratum Lucidum: only found in thick skin
Stratum Granulosum
keratinocyte
Stratum Spinosum
Melanocytes
stratum basale
Deepest layer of skin, lots of cell division
Dermis
dense irregular connective tissue
reticular layer
papillary layer
Hypodermis
adipose tissue: stores fat and acts as a shock absorbent
Not part of the skin
