Literacy Facilitator

Coordinate class trips to the community public library for students get a public library cards and to learn about what their public library can offer them
Purchasing quality books that:
- support the Ontario Curriculum
- represent the diverse community (e.g., multilingual books)
- meet the needs and interest of the students

- give book talks and have students give book talks
- support struggling readers by helping them to find "just the right book"
- help students choose books for reading pleasure
- organize reading clubs in collaboration with other teachers: Boys' Reading Club, Silver Birch Reading Club
- promote and showcase newly bought books to staff and suggest read aloud books that are linked to character development, growth mindset and current topics that are being learned in the classroom
- create a warm and inviting physical space in the library where students/staff can come to read (e.g., bean bags, cushions/pillows)
- select books for teachers to use in their classrooms or in the Learning Commons that connect to the topic or teaching goal (e.g., books that model persuasive writing, books that support their science or social studies inquiries)
- collaborate with teachers to select technology or digital tools that connect to their teaching goals
- co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess lessons that develop research skills and information literacy skills through inquiry-based projects
- teach students about how to be good digital citizens and how to cite sources and respect copyright laws
- teach students to think critically of the information they access both in print and online

- co-plan and host Family Literacy Nights
- invite authors to come read and promote their books to families
- attend Parent Council Nights and talk about literacy and what is happening in the Learning Commons
- create a Literacy Newsletter that can be sent home or featured on the school's Virtual Library site
- promote and participate in special literacy events:
