Accommodation in Belgium
In Belgium, a policy of Accommodation was adopted
The constitution was amended four time between 1970 & 1993 to enable everyone to live together in peace and harmony
In fact they came up with innovative arrangements that are different from those in any other country
- The Central government has equal number of French & Dutch ministers
- Many powers of the central government was given to the state governments of the two regions. The state governments are not under the central government
- Brussels have a separate government and has equal French & Dutch representatives
The French accepted equal representation in the capital (even though they are a majority) as the Dutch agreed to equal representation in the central government (even though they have a majority)
- There are also "community governments" elected by people speaking a particular language no matter where they live
There are separate community governments for the Dutch, the French & the Germans
They take decisions regarding culture, education, language & related issues
