The presence of certain systemic conditions may actually enhance or intensify the response to the oral biofilms beyond what would occur if the systemic condition were not present. Numerous conditions potentially modify biofilm accumulation and disease progression. Bacteria are essential for the development of periodontitis but they are insufficient by themselves. A rather large # of genetic and environmental or acquired factors place individuals at risk for periodontitis.
Perio may itself be a risk factor for other infections in the body, systemic diseases, and pregnancy related problems. Risk factors may predict but not necessarily cause them.
