Using Energy 10.1
Every thing you do or activity that you complete uses up your energy.
Energy Supplies
There is only a number of things that a human can do with machines.
Airplanes, Cars and Buses.
Electricity Brings Energy
Electricity is produced in large power stations. The station may be far away from us but the electricity reaches by metal cables known as wires.
Chemical Stores of Energy 10.2
To live an active live we need food to give us our energy.
Batteries Store Energy
A torch uses different types of energy it does not use fuel it uses batteries to light up. If the batteries runs out of battery then your going to have to use another battery
Energy Stored In Chemicals
Foods, fuel and batteries are called
chemical stores of energy.
To get the energy of fuel and gas you have to burn it.
More Energy Stores 10.3
Many clocks use batteries to work. There are two types of clocks a one that uses a wound-up spring and another that uses a heavy weight.
Storing Energy in a Spring
You have to work hard to squash or stretch a spring and that is because its stores energy to be specific
elastic energy
Storing Energy in a Raised Object
When you lift a hammer up to hit a nail it stores energy and then when you let go the energy is being used to smash the nail.
When you lift and object up you have to over come the force of gravity pulling it downwards. So we say that a lifted object stores gravitational potential energy.
Thermal Energy 10.4
When you heat something up we say that it stores
thermal energy
When you put large stones in a fire it gets hot and stores thermal energy
When you put the hot stones into water the water becomes hot thats because the
thermal energy
is being transferred form the stones into the water.
Thermal Energy Escaping
A good energy store must last for a long time.
Thermal energy
is not like that its energy spreads out into the surroundings so that the object can cool down.
Kinetic Energy 10.5
When and object is moving we say that it has
kinetic energy
and when an object stops it has no more
kinetic energy
.
Kinetic Energy More or Less
If an object is moving fast it has more
kinetic energy.
If two objects are moving at the same speed the one with more weight has more
kinetic energy.
Slowing Down
When a moving object stops or slows down a force called
friction
slows the moving object until it stops.
Energy on the Move 10.6
Now lets look at how energy can be
transferred
.
Electricity Transfers Energy
Most homes have supplies of main electricity that can operate lights. The electricity in the wires is called
electrical energy
.
Energy Spreading Out
Energy that is spreading out from hot objects is called
heat energy
. If an object is super hot and it starts to glow we say that is stores
light energy
.
Sound Spreading Out
If you bang an
object it vibrates
. Vibration carries the sound from the object into our ears.
Energy Changing Form
Energy can come in many different forms some for storing and another for transferring.
Keeping Track of Energy
When energy is transferred it can change from one form to another.
Energy is Conserved 10.8
We measure energy in
joules
(j).
Conservation of Energy
A torch uses a battery as its energy supply but if you use the torch too much the battery will run out.
Energy Never Disappears
When you use all the energy from the battery it doesn't mean that the energy is gone its just that the energy has changed its form.
