Arranging
Select a piece of popular music that resonates with students in your community
Inquire with a significantly older family member about a popular piece of music from their childhood.
Journal
Complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting style, musical elements, and other properties of the music.
Make an arrangement of your originally selected popular music selection.
Composing
In groups, study a variety of methods used to compose
Study your heritage and bring in a representation of your culture. Examples include artwork, tradition, song, poetry, literature, etc.
Journal
Create an analysis of your selected heritage item.
In a group, create an original composition to be performed in a recital that connects with one piece of artwork from the group
Emotion Map
Complete emotion circle using synonyms and act out different emotions in groups
Analyze the structure and sections of the piece and create a map of the piece
Journal
Listen to the piece multiple times filling out the map with the different emotions students experiences/identified
Newspaper
Establish different roles students can take on i.e. researcher, interviewer, editor, photographer, etc.
Publish paper to be handed out during concert

Students collaborate to complete their portion of the paper; meet the musician, program notes, project showcase, student surveys, journal entries, overview of class, etc.
Rehearsal Check-Up
After performing, critique the ensembles performance using the 'Check-Up Chart'

Over the course of the year students collect recordings of various performances, either personal practice, concerts, rehearsals, outside groups, etc.
Write a reflective journal about your progress, what went well, what you can improve, and what steps you need to take to improve further
