2. Eg: Comparison of Maharashtra, Kerala & Bihar
Per capita income of M, K & B in 2012 - 13 - approximately Rs 1 lakh, Rs.88000 & Rs 29,000
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) - It is the number of deaths per 1,000 live births of children under one year of age.
IMR in 2012 for M, K, B - 25, 12, 43
Net Attendance Ratio - Total number of children in the age group 14 and 15 years attending school, expressed as a percentage of the total number of children in that age group
Literacy Rate: Total number of literate persons in the age group, 7 and above, expressed as a percentage of the total number of persons in that age group
LR in 2011 for M, K, B - 82, 94, 62
NAR in 2009 - 10 for M, K, B - 64, 78, 35
3. Analysis of M, K, B example
If per capita income is used as the basis of development, Maharashtra will be considered the most developed & Bihar the least developed
If IMR is considered, in Kerala, 12 children below one year of age died out of 1000 children born but in Maharashtra, it is more than double at 25i
-
In Bihar, two thirds of the children in the age group of 14 - 15 years are not attending class beyond class 8
Conclusion: Per capita income alone is not an measure of development. Other factors such as IMR, LR, NAR etc have to be considered
