Genetic Factors and Disabilities
- many disabilities are caused by genetic differences: mutations, general anormalies.
- can be inherited or specific to individual who is impacted
Disabilities with genetic components include:
- Muscular dystrophies
- Sickle cell anemia
- Hemophilia
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Juvenile diabetes
Treatment Options
- Gene replacement therapy: where defective genetic material is replaced and corrected.
- Germ line therapy: where sperm/ egg cells are modified by introducing functional genes
- somatic gene therapy
Educational Assessments
- identification of children with physical disabilities and health impairments
Norm-referenced tests are not an adequate measure of the true abilities of many children with disabilities as they compare child's score with typical score for other normal children their age. the norm group rarely includes children with disabilities thus which may lead to faulty assumptions..
The law requires educational assessments to be timely, comprehensive and multidisciplinary.
Characteristics/ Recognizing children with physical disability
- lacks coordination between eye hand movements or stiff/ awkward walking gait
- solves problems that are age-appropriate with difficulty (etc: stacking up 2-3 blocks)
- utters very limited sounds, unclear pronunciation
- Stiff legs with pointed toes
- Difficulty standing
- Only one side moves
Teachers needs to:
- know the developmental milestones for typical developing children
- Observations
- Assessments
- Major developmental areas[ physical, language, cognitive, social, emotional)
Major Health Impairments
- Juvenile Diabetes: blood sugar is abnormally high because body does not produce enough insulin (type 1), or body is insensitive to insulin (type 2)
- Cancer: common in children are leukemia, brain tumours, lymphoma
- Cardiac conditions: heart defects (murmurs, rapid heart-beat0
- sickle cell anemia
Congenital diseases
- Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome (AIDS)/ Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- TORCHS infection: infectious congenital diseases that includes rubella, herpes simplex infections, toxoplasmosis
Acquired Disease
- Hepatitis B
- Meningitis
- encephalititis
Severe and Multiple disabilities
- those who requires extensive ongoing support in more than one major life activity in order to participate in community settings
- Broad range of people: psychiatric disorders, deaf blindness, combinations of health, motor or cognitive impairments
