Respiration in Humans
-
2. Lungs
Within the lungs , the passage divides into smaller and smaller tubes and finally ends in balloon like structure called alveoli
-
When we breathe in, we lift our ribs, flatten the diaphragm and the chest cavity expands

-
During the breathing cycle, when the air is let in and out, there is always some residual air in the lungs so that there is sufficient time for the CO2 to be released and O2 to be absorbed
3. Role of Haemoglobin
When the body size of an animal is large, oxygen cannot be transported to all parts of the body by diffusion
In humans, respiratory pigment called Haemoglobin found in red blood cells have very high affinity for O2
Hemoglobin takes up O2 from the lungs and carry it to all parts of the body where it is deficient and release it
