The G23 : A 700c rim that will accommodate tires between 35mm and 45mm and is best suited for riders focusing on speed,
G27: A 650b rim that is optimized for tires between 2 and 2.25 inches that perform better on loose, rough roads.
The 700c G23 rim weighs 330 grams, with a depth of 25mm and an internal width of 23mm. Enve recommends running 25 to 35 psi on 40mm tires for optimal performance.
The 650b G27 is the same depth as the G23, but is 10 grams lighter and has an internal width of 27mm. Enve recommends a tire pressure of 20 to 30 psi on a 2-inch tire.
The G23 wheelsets come in at 1,300 grams (with DT Swiss hubs) and 1,342 grams (with Chris King hubs);
the G27 wheelsets are claimed to weigh 1,275 grams (with DT Swiss hubs) and 1,310 grams (with Chris King hubs).
With wider tires (or wider wheels) you can run them at a lower air pressure while still the same amount of air needed to hold your bike and body weight in what is now the larger volume of space between your tires and wheels. Lower pressure tires are more comfortable because they absorb more of the road’s imperfections.
Wider tires without wider wheels certainly won’t make your bike any more responsive, accelerate any faster
A tire that’s too wide for its rim is more likely to experience a pinch flat when you are leaning into a turn or turning at a good speed. The tire bead can also pull away from the rim hook in the turn, also resulting in a flat. Not good, to say the least.
A wider tire and a wider rim together provide better handling. The wider rim sets the foundation for the wider tire to better keep its shape as you can see in the drawing on the left above. #

A 25C tire on 19C or wider wheel – best comfort, improved speed and handling over options above. A nice set-up for long endurance rides at a good average speed (18mph/29kph or higher) especially on deeper (>35-40mm) and preferably rounded profile wheels. But, most alloy wheels aren’t going to be that deep or have a rounded rim profiles where the spokes join the rim.
A 23C tire on a 19C or narrower wheel – best speed. If you’ve chosen this set-up, crits, road races or TTs and triathlons are probably your passion, deeper aero wheels are probably your preferred hoops and comfort is further down your list of what matters though there are plenty of wheelsets in this width that will be plenty comfortable to start without the need for a wider tire.

The Black Label name from Reynolds’ premium mountain offering is now used for top-end products in road and gravel as well (MSRP: $2,099 across all styles).“That will always be our premium product. And that features the best rim, the best spoke, and the best hub, which at the moment is all exclusively Industry Nine,” Montgomery said.
“Then we have a midprice at $1,549, and those products generally move down one degree of quality of hub and spoke, and sometimes some slight changes in the rim. Then we have an entry-level price point at $1,299, which goes to a round spoke generally and a slightly heavier hub.”
Road wheels will be available for rim and disc brakes in rim depths up to 80 millimeters for the Black Label premium aero offering.
Reynolds is also introducing a new lifetime warranty that contains no rider weight limits and “covers all crashes and abuse.”
“It basically says that if you have a problem with your wheel we’re willing to fix it, and that gives people a lot of confidence. We’ll replace it pretty much no questions asked,” Montgomery said.
