The Muscular System Destiny Espitia Per.5
Major Functions of Muscular System
motion/movement:
change in body position. movement of substances within body
posture:
maintain posture. stabilizing joints, posture, regulate organ volume
thermogenesis:
heat production. contraction produces heat, helps w/ homeostasis
Muscles
Skeletal muscle: cell long, cylindrical, parellel, multinucleated// attached to tendons to bones/ joined another cell at intercalated disc
Cardiac Muscle: long, cylindrical, branched, single central nucleus//forms heart wall// straited
Smooth Muscle ( Visceral Muscle): single-shaped q/single central nucleus, no strations, appears smooth// controls movement inside internal organs
body movement terminology
Prime Mover: muscle contraction whose mainly responsible for producing body movement
Synergist: muscle contraction who help the primary mover
Antagonist: muscle whose actions oppose the action of prime mover
Structure & Organizational levels of skeletal muscle
skeletal muscle is an organ composed of skeletal cells and connective tissue
Origin: end of muscle that attaches to bone
body: main part of muscle
tendons: strong cords of fibrous C.T that attach muscles to bone
ligaments: strong cord of fibrous C.T that attach bone to bone
bursae: synovial-lined sacs containing synovial fluid
Physiology of muscle contraction (sliding filament theory)
1.) nerve impulses of action potential travels down sarcolemma, release ca++ into sacroplasm
2.) Ca++ binds to actin filament, exposing myosin binding site
3.)myosin attach to actin/ forms actin/myosin cross bridges
4.)myosin head moves to m line or sacromere
5.)actin repeated many times powered by ATP
6.) z line gets close together/ H line dissapears shortening entire myofibril
Functions and characteristics of Muscles
Functions
: 1.
motion and movement
: change in body position and movement of substances w/in body 2.
posture
:maintain posture/ stabalize joints, posture, regulate organ volume 3.
Thermogenesis:
heat prod// contaction produces heat; helps w/ homeostasis
Characteristics
Irritability;
ability to muscle & nerve to respond to stimulus by prod. electrical signals of action potentials
Contraclity:
ability to shorten when adequate stimulus is received
