Compromise settled the conflict when Missouri wanted to join the U.S.

Missouri joined as a slave state and Maine joined as a slave state.

Congress lowered the tariff rates by Henry Clay and Jackson could use army to collect tariffs.

Tariffs drove up prices and the south saw it as only helping
the North's manufacturing.

Tariff of 1828: Caused a political crisis with the south and SC resists to not pay the tax

Tariff of 1832: SC nullifies the tariff and considered leaving the union, but Pres. Jackson wouldn't allow disunion

California would be a free state

Texas relinquishes land and get 10 mil. from federal gov.

Outlawed slave trade in D.C., but slavery is allowed

People had to act as kidnappers/slave catchers

The underground railroad was very popular at the time because people wanted to escape to Canada
