Scheyfve, Emperor's ambassador, feared nothing could be done to prevent Jane's succession b/c no senior nobles or Privy Councillors had declared for Mary
Also thought that Northumberland must have had assurance of French support
12 July: reports arrived from East Anglia of people (including senior gentry, noble families + some protestants) supporting Mary
Mary had more support in numbers (20,000 in forces)
19 July: Privy Council left tower of London and said they had maid a mistake
19: July people in streets of London celebrated accession of Mary

8 July 1533: Lord Mayor of London, alderman + Merchant Adventurers summoned to Greenwich to be informed of Edward's death
forced to sign devise for new succession
Same time council ordered sheriffs to raise forces in nearby counties
10 July 1533: Lady Jane Grey taken to Tower where she was proclaimed Queen
10 July = news arrived from Mary
Mary appealed to Emperor Charles V for assistance
She had proclaimed herself queen in East Anglia
Once council rejected her claim, Mary started mustering troops
11 July: Northumberland's sons in Norfolk had failed to intercept Mary w/ a small force
Northumberland set out w/ 2000 forces
17 July: forces started to desert b/c of rumours that Mary had 30,000
