In many dystopian texts propaganda and indoctrination is used to control societies, similarly the same way as they do in todays societies. In Uglies and City of ember there are many examples of this. In Uglies society is made to believe that all people in the smoke and before the procedure era, are bad and that the pretty life is so great."The Rusty Ruins were the remains of an old city, a hulking reminder of back when there'd been way too many people, and everyone was incredibly stupid. And ugly." This is a symbol of the ignorance of society to the past and how the government easily controls them. In contrast in City of Ember there are many examples of propaganda and indoctrination. Everyone is made is made to believe that "beyond ember the darkness goes on forever in all directions, ours is the only light in a dark world." As the deceitful mayor knows that is not true but he is lying and deceiving everyone for his own benefit and greed. Alike today many societies in the world such as North Korea, use propaganda and indoctrination for their own benefit. Considering both City of Ember and Uglies in is evident that they are both plausible futures as it takes todays propaganda and indoctrination and takes it to the extreme.
