- - - - In dystopian texts there is an element of power and corruption within the societies, in both Uglies and City of Ember we see examples of this. In Uglies the whole idea of their structure of the social hierarchy based on appearance is corrupted. The fact that during the procedure the government put lesions in your brain to control you to think a certain way and follow their rules. “Your personality, the real you inside, was the price of beauty.” Similarly in City of Ember we see how one of the characters, the mayor has as abused his power to control the people. One of the most pivotal examples is when we find out that the mayor has been stealing food from the people. At this time in the story the whole society is running out of food and everyone is made to believe that there is limited supplies of food, but that is not the case. We then see a shot of the mayor sitting in a volt feasting on isles and isles of food. The mayor has chosen to keep all this food for himself and share it with no one because he has been corrupted by power and selfishness. The mayors volt is a symbol of his greed. Both in Uglies and City of Ember we see how a abundance of power can dehumanise the government decisions and societies choices.
  - - - Uglies and City of Ember both contain self centred and selfish characters. In Uglies there are many examples of characters led to be self centred or selfish by the government. Just one example is Tally Youngbloud. Towards the end of the novel tally is deceived by the government into betraying the smoke otherwise she would never see never become pretty. "She took a deep breath, wondering why she was saying all this, lying to Shay when she didn't really have to. She should just shut up, get to the Smoke, and get it over with. But Tally found herself continuing" Tally has clearly been misguided into being a selfish character and betraying her friends for no one other that herself. In contrast Lizzie from City of Ember is overcome will selfishness when her boyfriend gives her tins of caned food that have been unfairly distributed by the government. Lizzie suddenly finds her self with all this food and does not want to share it with anyone but herself. This sudden claim of food is an example of her overpowering selfishness. In both texts we see two good examples of how our human nature can be influenced by a government into being self centred and selfish.
  - - - In many dystopian texts governments use propaganda and indoctrination to control societies. In Uglies and City of ember there are many examples of this. In Uglies society is made to believe that all people in the smoke and before the procedure era, are bad and that the pretty life is so utopian."The Rusty Ruins were the remains of an old city, a hulking reminder of back when there'd been way too many people, and everyone was incredibly stupid. And ugly." The societies perception of the Rusty Ruins is a symbol of the ignorance of society to the past and how the government easily controls them. In contrast in City of Ember there are many examples of propaganda and indoctrination. Everyone is made is made to believe that "beyond ember the darkness goes on forever in all directions, ours is the only light in a dark world" As the deceitful mayor knows that there is a better life out side Ember but he is lying and deceiving everyone that it is for his own benefit and greed.
