Industrial Systems
INPUTS
RAW MATERIALS
These are the commodities that will be changed into the final product. Heavy industries require raw materials that are bulky and expensive to transport. Light industries use materials that are small in volume and high in value, so it is less important for them.
WATER SUPPLY
Manufacturing of paper, certain chemicals and metals requires more water than can be provided by the normal water supply. These industries might need to be located where they have their own water supplies from rivers or boreholes.
SITE
Large scale manufacturing industries need the correct site. This is often the case with the motor industry or chemical manufacturing.
LABOUR
Overall size in the labour force is important to industries. There can be thousands of employees. However particular types of skill and flexibility may be more important to some industries.
CAPITAL
Technically, this is something required to help in producing other goods, for example machinery or storage buildings however it is usually taken to be money.
ENERGY
For many industries a link to the electricity grid is sufficient. For a few manufacturing industries there are greater requirements.
OUTPUTS
WASTE
Waste materials are produced by many manufacturing processes. It maybe a source of air and water pollutionate. The disposal of waste is costly and even dangerously
PRODUCTS
Commodities (or services) that are sold on the market to make a profit and raise capital for
re-investment.
PROCESSES
Activities that go on in different types of industries, e.g: farming, quarry, factory or office.
