The Learner (Serena, Summer and April)

A rapid rate of development
during the early years occurs in the physical, emotional, social and cognitive domains
Children are naturally inclined to explore, to discover, to play and to make connections between
self, others and their entire surroundings
The Teachers Role: to be a faciitator, participant, observer and documentor.
Play is important part in the development of an Early Learner: When a teacher creates an environment surrounding play, teachers are creating a non-threatening environment for children to learn about the world at their own pace.
Children are natural inquirers from birth, they are both curious and capable learners.
Teachers support Early Learners by:
- planning uninterupted time for play.
- building strong relationships with studets and their families.
- having opportunities for exploration and expression.
- creating and maintaining responsive places for play.
Young students’ development is supported when hands-on learning is combined with student-initiated
play. A careful consideration exists between student-initiated play and teacher-initiated experiences.
-
Learner Agency: Voice, Choice and Ownership
When learners have agency, the role of the teacher and student changes; the relationship between a teacher and a student is viewed as a partnership.
-
PYP students with agency use their own initiative and will, and take responsibility and ownership of their learning.
When teachers acknowledge learner agency and the importance of self-efficacy, students become partners in the learning process.
-
give students as many opportunities as possible to develop and demonstrate the approaches to learning and attributes of the learner profile.
The Learner Profile
-
developing and demonstrating the attributes of the learner profile in ways that are relevant to the local
-
provide teachers, students and parents with a common language
Teachers and students collaborate to identify appropriate learner profile attributes that are relevant and
meaningful to specific units of inquiry.
What is the new Learner Profile Cycle: Demonstrating, Valuing, Appreciating, Celebrating, Developing?
The attributes are flexibly explored, developed and revisited through units of inquiry
Exhibition
The exhibition is the culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the PYP.
The degree to which students are engaged with planning and implementing their exhibition
depends on the students and schools’ experience with the PYP.
All exhibitions are student-initiated, designed and collaborative.
The exhibition is an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their
understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance.

The foundation of action comes from an understanding of self and a responsibility
towards relationships with peers and the wider community.
