EVALUATION of Correlations
STRENGTHS
E
Easy and include input from researcher so nothing needs to be set up artificially -> use pre-existing data
E
Correlations can help us to decide whether new research should be generated to investigate relationships that may to have been thought of previously
P
They can lead to new research
E
Both sets of data are provided by the same person so each participant acts as their own control
E
Individual differences will not affect the results
P
They control for participant variables
E
Easily replicable method involved e.g self-report questionnaires provide standardised procedure
E
Can be replicated for consistency of results
P
Reliable
E
E.g unethical to study number of fags smoked and lung capacity
E
Correlations allow researchers to investigate without artificially setting top a study
P
Allow us to investigate unethical situations
WEAKNESSES
E
Self-report methods can lead to social desirability
E
If honest answer are not disclosed then it is an invalid correlation
P
Lack of Validity
E
E.g hospital records may be outdated or have been subject to biased interpretation
E
May invalidate the correlations if there have been flaws in data collection
P
Problems with using secondary data
E
Impossible to claim that one co-variable causes another, as a third unknown variable could be causing both to change
E
Could lead to incorrect conclusions and misunderstandings e.g may be a problem between daycare and children's behavioural problems but we cannot be sure of this because interrupting variables may play a part
P
Cant infer cause and effect relationship
