Valuing the person
Person centered approach
-
Assumptions on people according to Rogers→ essentially trustworthy, potential for understanding themselves, resolving their own problems (no need to proved or intervene solutions)
Attitudes and personal characteristics of the helper and quality of the relationship w/ the person determines the outcome
-
This approach is non intrusive, respectful, person treated as an equal.
Confidentiality
Respect the person's need for confidentiality, emphasize at the beginning of the convo
Limits→ensure the safety of other and yourself, could be a dilemma, responsible where issues of safety are concerned
Disclosing information→accept you are breaking their trust, you may let the person know you are doing it, if you feel your safety is at risk, protect yourself, pass the info discreetly
Ethical principles
Clear limits on the clossenes of the relationship→avoid getting too close→likely to lose ability of standing back objectively and assess the needs
-
Equality in the relationship→both are respected and valued, neither one is superior or inferior. Somewhat unequal, one sided: person talks, helper listens, limited disclosure of the helper, avoid unrealistic dependencies or attachments
