Digital Identity and Agency
Francis Bacon- Philosophy of Technology: The Technologic Condition
Knowledge is powerful
This idea in the wrong hands (like big tech. companies) means they could manipulate or take advantage of its users
Users need to be informed on what is really going on
We must decided to pursue knowledge or remain content
However, Bacon believes not to try is a greater hazard then to fail
If you think of it from the tech. side is failing at the cost of harming innocent people worth it?
Knowledge should be shared
Michel Foucault, Panopticism
Surveillance is power
It's an important mechanism for it automatizes and disindividualizes power
This could be positive or negative depending on how you view the situation
Why is it so hard for people to trust?
Who remains responsible for when people are trusted and they do something wrong
It should be the person who commited the wringing but I think people feel that they take on some responsibility because they were looking after or supervising that person
The question also comes into play at one age should we start surveilling?
What and who decided on the boundaries of the surveillance?
Do the individuals being watched know?
Body cameras on police
Camera's on traffic lights
Facebook
Conformation diminishes creativity
Conformation creates order
Do we as a society value order over creativity? Does order create a safe place for you to takes risks? However, are those risks manipulated by whatever laws or rules that have been dictated.
Julia Ticona- Uneasy in Digital Zoom
Who is to blame with loss of agency due to technology?
Are Facebook and other tech. companies strictly a business and therefore they can justify experimenting with their users?
When you are manipulated- you lose control. so to me the responsibility falls o the companies and designers.
It's ironic because I resonated with a feeling of being sucked in but even as I read that I felt helpless because I know there is no solution right now.
It's good to feel uneasy. Technology is still very new. Its implications are still being discovered.
Nothing is sacred anymore
Unplugging doesn't stop us from experiencing our lives through their lenses, frames and formats p.68
We need to explore ways in which we can build a more equitable and critical ecology for our digital lives p.70
Parker J. Palmer- The Courage to Teach
Big idea- we teach who we are
Self knowledge will benifit our students.
Human heart is the source of good teaching
What is my personal identity?
Why is this so hard to answer?
Who could guide me on this journey?
How do I justify this journey?
