MACBETH
"THE THREE WITCHES" P. 101, PARAPHRASE WITH WR SYNONYMS.
WITCHES ARE USUALLY UGLY OLD WOMEN, SOMETIMES APPEAR IN DISGUISE AND MAKE PROPHECIES OR CAST SPELLS AND SPEAK IN RIDDLES (JOKES). HERE THEY FLY IN THE FOG AND DIRTY AIR AND ARE RELATED TO MISTERIOUS ANIMALS: CATS AND TOADS.
THEIR PROPHECY IS THEY'LL MEET AGAIN IN THE MOORS WHEN CHAOS IS OVER AND THE BATTLE IS LOST AND WON (DUNCAN DIES, HIS SON IS KING AGAIN)
THIS SCENE ISN'T REAL BUT SHAK. WANTS THE AUDIENCE TO BELIEVE THEY ARE REAL. THIS IS WHY THE STAGE IS EMPTY (NO PROPS): THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE WITCHES AND REAL OBJECTS COULD HAVE UNDERLINED THAT THE WITCHES WEREN'T REAL AT ALL.
IT'S THE OPENING SCENE. THREE WITCHES APPEAR ON STAGE AND IT'S STORMY BECAUSE IT'S A PERIOD OF DISORDER AND CHAOS: THE KING HAS BEEN KILLED AND A TYRANT IS ON THE THRONE.
-
CHAOS AND CONFUSION OF VALUES (MAIN THEME) IS REPRESENTED BY WORDS LIKE HIRLYBURLY, LOST AND WON, FAIR IS FOUL AND FOUL IS FAIR.
