Benznidazole
MECHANISM OF ACTION
-
The nitro group of nitroimidazoles is believed to be reduced by the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase complex to create a reactive nitro radical species.
Inhibits DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis within the T cruzi parasite
DNA in parasites affected by benznidazole has been found to undergo extensive unpacking with overexpression of DNA repair proteins supporting the idea of DNA damage contributing to the mechanism of the drug
