Knowledge as a path to freedom
"If you teach a nigger how to read there would be no keeping him. it would forever unfit him to be a slave." (Douglass 42)
It would be no reason of holding a slave that can read and write.
Captain Thomas Auld
Thomas Auld is an incompetent slaveholder who has neither the ability nor courage to hold slaves. At a religious meeting he 'finds religion' and becomes extremely religious
Auld forbids his wife to teach Douglass how to read and write because education ruins slaves.
He didn't want Douglass to learn anything because he will have a chance to fight back somehow.
The victimiztion of female slaves
"She had already given birth to one child, which proved her to be just what he wanted. After buying her, he hired a married man of Mr.Samuel Harrison , to live with him one year: and him he used to fasten up with her every night! The result was that at the end of the year, the miserable women gave birth to twins.'' (Douglass 42)
He was sure that the women was useful for making baby's and could make them easy.
He sends somebody to have sex and make baby's so he could make a profit off of selling them.
Sends Mr.Samuel Harrison to try and breed baby's every night to make money of them.

Truth and Justice
"The slightest in attention to these was unpardonable. They were severest punished; no excuse could shield them" (Douglass 20)
He was very cruel and beat people with no hesitation.
Some slaves couldn't resist eating fruit out of it. To prevent them, Lloyd puts tar on the fence surrounding the garden and whips any slave found with tar on them.
Easily could prove if slaves was lying or not.
Mr.Austin Gore
He has the qualities of a first-rate overseer.
Slaveholding as a perversion of christianity
"If their increase will do no other good, it will do away the force of the argument , that god cursed ham, and therefore american slavery is right." (Douglass 5)
Brainwash slaves to confuse them on what to believe and make them think that god wanted slavery.
Changing things in the bible and saying slavery was a good thing, So slaves cant revolt
.
Stop slaves from trying to break away and escape. Because slaveowners made it seem like a sin.
