US beverage company Powell & Mahoney has announced updated secondary packaging for its 12-ounce (355ml) 4-pack Ginger Beer, Tonic, Blood Orange Ginger Beer, and Mojito. The company has replaced the plastic top carrier with recyclable corrugated boxes to promote sustainability and enhance shelf presence.
Beer giant Molson Coors is preparing to launch cannabis-infused beers in Canada after sales of cannabis-infused products in brick-and-mortar stores is legalised. According to the company, they will be one of the first to launch as soon as the Canadian market opens up in April 2019.
In August 2018, California's The Bruery tested new boundaries when it launched a bourbon barrel-aged, coconut macaroon-flavoured pastry stout called Bakery. Available in canned format, the 13% ABV imperial stout was made from the idea of combining delicious ingredients to create a sweet and tasty treat.
In October 2018, AB InBev unveiled its fully-automated warehouse in Magor, Wales, capable of holding 23 million pints of beer. Its operation will reduce 605 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the brewery. The system has three large robotic arms delivering pallets of beer to waiting lorries.
Wine
France-based Maison M. Chapoutier winery shared the story behind the adoption of Braille on the label of its Belleruche Côtes-du-Rhône red and white blends. The company explained the braille on wine's label has helped blind shoppers choose wines they prefer without taking any foreign assistance.
Leading UK wine expert Tim Atkin gave a perfect score to South African wine, the 2015 Kanonkop Paul Sauer — his first-ever perfect score to a New World wine. His 2018 report on SA wines scored nearly 2,000 wines and classified 250 of the best wineries.
In October 2018, jewelled bottles of champagne priced at GBP £115,000 (USD $150,000) were sold at luxury store Harrods, marking the highest prices ever charged outside of fine wine auctions. The Piper Heidsieck Prestige Cuvée Le Secret bottles were decked with sapphires, rubies and diamonds.
In November 2018, Napa Valley-based House of Saka announces the launch of Saka Wines, a luxury line of alcohol-removed wines. The Brut Rosé and still Rosé include a proprietary formulation of tasteless, odourless, water-soluble THC and CBD derived from organic cannabis.
Liqueur
British gin brand Didsbury prepared for the festive period by launching a limited-edition Christmas Pudding Gin Liqueur, which has an 18% ABV and is served over ice or warm by brand recommendation. The Christmas release follows the success of the brand’s Original, Raspberry and Elderflower variants.
In October 2018, grocery store chain Trader Joe’s released a Pumpkin Spice Cream Liqueur. The fall-inspired flavoured liqueur was announced via Instagram and will only be available for a limited period. The American Fall sees many pumpkin-spiced makeovers — from vodka to beer and rum.
In November 2018, Canadian alcohol manufacturing company Corby expanded the McGuinness liqueurs range with the introduction of McGuinness Ruby Red Grapefruit. The addition aims to enhance consumers’ cocktail-making experience with its natural grapefruit flavour, sold in a 375ml format for a more convenient and affordable option.
In October 2018, Yorkshire-based drinks producer Intercontinental Brands secured listings for its cream liqueur brand, Carthy & Black in retailers Marks & Spencer and Morrisons. It was regarded as essential for the liqueur brand to gain more presence in the retail sector to meet the growing demand
Spirits
In August 2018, Pernod Ricard partnered with UK distributor Mathew Clark for the UK's We Love Gin initiative. The campaign focused on tools and staff training and also sent out activation kits with products like branded glassware and a 'perfect serve' booklet to create bespoke drinks.
In December 2017, Regal Dry Gin initiated bar activation programmes engaging numerous consumers in several bars across Ogun and Lagos, Nigeria. The three-week programme involved giving consumers free samples of Regal Dry Gin mixed with other drink brands. Regal also rewarded loyal customers and trade partners.
In September 2018, Tokyo-based distillery Nikka released two single malts finished in Manzanilla sherry casks — one from Miyagikyo and one from Yoichi — exclusively in Japan. At 48% ABV, both single malts have fruity and spicy notes from the sherry casks.
In Jan 2018, Gordon’s Gin launched a service — called #YayDelay — at Waterloo, offering free and half-priced drinks to delayed commuters. Brits spent more than 3.6 million hours waiting for late trains in 2016 and 2017, and Gordon's seized the opportunity to further consumer engagement.
In October 2018, Premium spirit maker Batch Brew unveiled a new bottle designed by Allied Glass. The new packaging is developed to reflect the premium nature of the handcrafted spirits manufactured by Batch Brew. The company expects the new design to refresh its image.
