Sustainable Development in Deserts
Importance of sustainability
Poor management in deserts cannot result in desertification of the desert region, but can desertify surrounding regions.
Unsustainable management may result in development projects constantly failing and requiring reconstruction or maintenance to succeed.
Deserts, like all ecosystems, present unique opportunities when managed sustainably.
Deserts take up over 6% of all landmass, so are one of the more prominent biomes.
Sustainable Management Techniques
Responsible irrigation
Poor use of irrigation will invariably result in salinisation of soil, further reducing desert soil quality.
Drip irrigation and Ghandi Canal, India, encourages use of responsible irrigation by farmers in the nearby desert.
Long term industries
Tunisian solar farms, planned to supply power to over 2 million homes in Europe. 40+km of solar panels.
Phosphate in Morocco, relatively short term industry, second largest phosphate exporter worldwide, significant.
Water sources
India Ghandi canal, provides water and some transportation.
Boreholes provide water but this can be saline.
Rainwater collection
Magic stones in Burkina Faso.
Wakel project, use of local and sustainable techniques.
Rainwater is still low (less than 250mm a year) so these techniques ultimately have limited use.
