• AD development has been associated with vascular and metabolic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes type 2, smoking, dyslipidemia, and obesity.

• Formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain
o Leads to progressive neuronal loss
• Progression leads to disorientation, aphasia and patient may become disables, mute, and immobile

TREATMENT

Decreased cholesterol decreases risk of vascular disease, which in turn decreases risk for AD

o People with intellectually enriched lives have reduced risk of developing AD and less decline in cognitive function
example: people with higher educational levels and professional attainment
o Physical activities, like gardening and exercise
