CHEMISTRY SIMS: AN INNOVATIVE DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY APPROACH
3 Student Groups
The 12 students that need to develop high order thinking skill
Assessments
Interactive Notebooks. The students will express what they have learned in their own words and give an example or extend on new ways or information for the lesson learned.
Online Quiz: The students will take an online quiz to show how much they learned. If the student did not score , he/she will watch a video related to the topic and take notes (Cornell Style) and then retake the quiz
Student Portfolios where students write about their own progress and whether or not they think they accomplished the objectives. for the lesson and how will they proceed if they feel they did not accomplish the objectives. I will follow through with their progress.
Simulation Report where they have answered the questions regarding the simulation and demonstrated the skill the learned
Strategy
1) Whole-Class Activity
I will conduct a whole class activity where I work on an example that focuses on the skill to give them an idea on how to use it. We then will have a small activity to work on the skill in groups or 3 to 4 students. I will walk around to ensure that they are progressing and provide support when needed
2)Simulation
I will have the students work in pairs on a simulation. They will be provided with instruction and activity related to the simulation that will focus on the skills as well as the content being learned
The 5 Students that already know most of the information
Strategy: Interest Stations
: I will have interest stations set up in the back of the classroom related to the topic being discussed. I will allow students to delve deeper into. the topic by researching information and presenting the information to classroom as a start of class activity through out the week in a format they like for example a powerpoint presentation or a documentary
Assessments
Student Reflections that include what the y learned and any challenges they overcame
An outline showcasing the research they did. I will use Noodletools as platform for them to do their research since it has an option that allows to build a timeline as they research the topic
A Performance Based Rubric for their final presentation that will include content, research skill, outline organization, and presentation criteria
Teacher Observations and questions : I will. be around in class and asking question about the topic that they are researching and how did they conduct the research and make notes of their responses to include in the final evaluation
The 5 students who don't much about the topic
ELL Learner at different levels
2)Strategy
: They will work on the simulation and be given special worksheet appropriate for the reading level. The simulation will be mostly visual which does not require much language skills. I will work more closely with them to ensure they are on the right track,
Assessment
Interactive notebooks where they actually are allowed tp draw diagrams and use simple sentence structures. Each ELL learner can express themselves in the way they are comfortable with
Group quiz : The students will take a group quiz together where the stronger ELL students can help out the other two students
Completed report on the simulation from each student written at level they are at
Special Needs students
2)Strategy
I will get them started on the simulation with direct instruction from me. They will a special activity guide designed for them and they will be allowed to work in a group. They also can ask a buddy ( student from the advanced group) for help when they need.
Assessment
Interactive notebooks where they express what they learned in the way they want. If any of the students feel overwhelmed or can not gather their thought, they are allowed to take it as homework
Online quiz using KAHOOT . The quiz will be modified and the students will have more time to answer the questions. If they don't pass the quiz. Their buddy ( the student from the advanced ) can help them understand the concept they missed and the students can take the quiz again
Mini discussion students can present their work or what they have learned from the simulation to each other in a small discussion together
