Conventions and Codes also associated with Horror are the many cinematography techniques including Establishing Shots, Extreme Close-Ups, Perspective Shots, and Tracking Shots. These are utilized to create that feeling of terror in horror films.
A lot of what we now see in Horror is still the same but there has been a few changes that has elevated the genre. The use of special affects and 3D has added a lot to the genre including better quality horror films especially in the gore factor. The use of sound has also improved providing an overall better movie experience.

Definition: Psychological is a narrative that emphasizes the unstable or delusional states of its characters.
2 films that exemplify Psychological are The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1921) and The Phantom of the Opera (1931)

A lot of codes and conventions used in all 3 genres are Setting, Theme, Events, Characteristics and Sound.
Most of the conventions and codes for all 3 genres are the same in regards with cinematography especially with the close up and perspective shots. The three genres use of props sometimes overlap especially like the use of Illusions and in some movies we like a Psychological Horror film we can see use of things like crosses.

Psychological horror is a sub-genre of horror that focuses on the darker side of humans that is often repressed.

Events- In psychological horror events usually are big struggles that happen in the mind. Events in the mind in this genre usually manifest itself to the point where it begins to affect the perception of the outside world.
Theme - Common themes in this genre are usually struggles
within that person. Often times that struggle is elevated to a
search for identifying something that they have repressed that is resurfacing.
Characteristics- The defining characteristics for this genre are suspicion, distrust, self-doubt or paranoia. These characteristics show the internal struggle that the characters go through.
Sounds- In this genre the sounds we would usually hear low ominous sounds that would be associated with the dark mood of the film. An ominous tone lends itself to a the story in a Psychological Horror film especially because the sound can be indicative of something about to come to light in a film.
Props featured in the Psychological Horror genre are mostly things from the mind. So a prop that would basically be utilized are Illusions.
Setting- In the psychological horror genre the setting usually takes place in the persons mind. Often times the way this would manifest physically as illusions to show that merging between reality and that persons mind.
