Inner Conflict 8-10 points of inner conflict that Tally experiences :
She does not accept herself, for her personality.
During the novel she is very down on herself about the choices she made
She often refers to herself in a way that implies she doesn't like the person she has become and is ashamed of it.
Quote, "I wish i just...."
This quote refers to the fact that Tally is always wishing she wasn't something or wishes she did something different.
She wishes for things instead of acknowledging things she did right.
She is not comfortable in her own skin and just wants to be like everybody else
Throughout the whole novel, there is not a time when Tally is happy with what she looks like and her actions.
She always says in the novel how ugly she is and how much she can't wait to fit the stereotypical perception of 'pretty'
Tally wants to turn pretty so she can fit in and look like everybody else.
Tally wants to just blend in, she doesn't want to be unique.
Tally hates herself enough, to not stand up for herself to special circumstances. She only did this to please everyone else like Sol, Ellie and Peris, she didn't do it for her sake or to please herself.
She has very high expectations of herself
Tally always expects herself to be perfect
I believe this is a very important point as this is what makes Tally a realistic dystopian protagonist
Tally thinks she has to be perfect to be pleased and comfortable with herself
Easily swayed by other peoples opinions
Tally's decision are changed easily by what others think because she badly wants to fit in with everyone else
Tally agreed to travel to the Smoke for Dr Cable because she wanted to become Pretty so others wouldn't see her as a repulsive Ugly.
Throughout the book Tally is constantly worrying about other opinions. Because she considers others opinions deeply, this affects the decisions she makes and the ability to be as independent as she could be.
Torn between friendship or love
After Tally reached the Smoke, she was torn between the decision of breaking her friendship with Shay to continue her relationship with David, or refuse the relationship with David to maintain her only friend, Shay.
She is always wishing for something more
Even when Tally has everything she wants in the novel she is always wishing for something more.
She is never pleased with what she has, who she is or what she looks like she always wants more than what she has or wants to change the things that she does have.
She always puts herself down
During the novel, there are any times where Tally puts herself down even after she has achieved something great.
She always puts herself down about what she does, when she does it and how she does it.
Torn between thinking with her heart or her head
Tally is always having to choose whether she should do things for her friends and family or do things with her head
Even if her friends and family are wrong she will still be torn between whether to choose her friends and family or think with her moral compass
