To improve patient flow, I believe that there must be a close relationship between the operational and clinical perspectives in order to meet the needs of the patient while delivering quality, valuable care In other words, to get the patient in and out of the hospital quickly and efficiently the healthcare organization must work as a team. For example, my friend's mother just recently went to the ER because she refuses to eat. She is a 95-year-old lady with advanced dementia and living at home with 24 hours care by a family member. The ER doctor diagnosed her with severe dehydration, infection in her right lung due to unsuspected cold, and infection from a bed sore. She ended up needing a feeding tube and a hospital bed at home, and care instructions to prevent bed sores from occurring. My friend was impressed at how the medical professionals worked together to get her mom the treatment she needed. While her mom was getting treated for the dehydration and infection the hospital care coordinator contacted the got the insurance approval for a hospital bed, found a company they can purchase the bed from, made the appointment to get the bed delivered to their home and set up appointment for a nutritional specialist to go their home for continued care. If it were not for that service and teamwork, the treatment outcome would have been poor.
