Differentiation strategies
Water cycle lesson
Grade 2
Day one
HIGH GROUP: 5 students who answered the most questions correctly during the pre-assessment
Prepare a visual presentation of the water cycle to present to the rest of the class at the end of the 1st day lesson. Computers can be use to further research.
Present to the whole group
Give them some guiding questions to research on the internet and then present to the class, such as:
1) How much of the earth's water is fresh water? How much is salt water?
2) Where do rain and snow come from? Are these made up of salt water or freshwater?
3) Why is it important to measure rain and snow around the globe?

MIDDLE GROUP: 12 students who have some knowledge, as indicated by their pre-assessment score
Do a carousel brainstorm in 3 groups to fill in knowledge gaps

Add new information to what the high group shows during their presentation
LOW GROUP: 5 students with limited knowledge
2 with no knowledge who should be tested for special needs
Autism spectrum
allow for use of assistive technologies with communication
ADHD
Allow for breaks to walk around or get a snack
Don't rely so much on written testing
allow student to use technology (voice to text) if writing is a challenge for them
3 students struggling with language
Allow more reliance on visuals to be able to explain and communicate
Accept grammatical and spelling errors for written reports as long as they are getting the main concepts
Pre-assessment

'Describe the water cycle' quiz
Hypotheses (Where does rain come from?)
After the 1st day differentiation, the group reconnects to share information
Come up with a big diagram together as a class and fill in the details as needed together
Teacher does a presentation to the whole group with an electric fry pan and ice cubes to end the lesson on the 1st day
DAY 2
Re-do a quiz from the day before as a formative assessment
Give anyone who seems not to have improved their knowledge from the day before the opportunity for extra help to understand the main concepts at a time outside of class
Make heterogeneous groups to make terrariums, a hands-on experiment that shows the process of condensation and precipitation
https://www.instructables.com/id/Self-Watering-Terrarium/
observe the terrariums and make simple reports

Individual project: Water cycle foldable
Students fill this in as much as they can. If they like writing a lot they can add lots of details, if not, jsut get the visuals down
1 more item...
Assign homework for everyone: to be condensation detectives in their homes and report back
Direct instruction
slow down the pace
use videos and visuals
Rejoin the main group after the direct instruction. Add information to the group as desired
