Aetiology
-
Breaks off and travel up the inferior vena cava, through the right side of the heart and to the lungs where it becomes lodged in a pulmonary artery.
The obstruction increases pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) = increasing the work of the right ventricle (back flow).

Further increases to PVR overcome the R ventricle's compensatory mechanisms = over distension of the R ventricle, increased RV end diastolic pressure and decreased RV cardiac output.
