DESIRE
-
IDEAS FOR GATSBY
Can be argued that Gatsby's desire is transient and intangible because he has crated an illusion a facade of himself and those around him. He has lost touch of reality.

DEFINE DESIRE
- a deep longing and attraction for something/ someone that can be unattainable. It can also be hedonistic and individualistic. It is a strong and overwhelming emotion to have or desperately wish for something to happen.
Gatsby's longing to reunite with Daisy is ultimately unsatisfactory and anti-climatic. It is an uncomfortable encounter because they had to "endure it" Gatsby's desires are more rewarding in the process of achieving it rather than receiving it. This makes desire very disappointing.
Materialistic desires: power, reputation, respect, class, wealth
Desire can be corrupting, destructive and something that can never break the ceiling of the hierarchy.
"Green light" in the Great Gatsby can symbolise Gatsby's ambition, longing and desire for Gatsby. "Gatsby believed in the green light...tomorrow we will run faster" shows the momentum and growing desire he has for Daisy; social class, reputation. Desires that he cannot have which he fails to realise.
