Imitation as an Instinct
Social facilitation is when the behavior of one animal prompts similar behavior s from another animal but the behavior is one that is already in the repertoire of the imitator.
Stimulus enhancement is when the behavior of a model directs the attention of the learner to a particular stimulus or place in the environment
Some gestures are easily imitated by young children (believed to be fixed action patterns) while others are not
True imitation is reserved for cases that cannot be explained by simpler mechanisms such as social facilitation or stimulus enhancement. True imitation is behavior that has never been performed before and is unusual for that species.
