How will my background effect me?
Race: White
Need to maintain awareness of privilege I may have as well as the oppression of others
May not seem approachable to minorities due to perceived privilege
I may not be able to relate to other cultures and need to make sure I am always educating myself-particularly on the different cultures that make up the population of the school that I am at
Sex: Female
girls may be more comfortable opening up to me
Could be perceived as weak or not knowledgeable due to my gender
Women may not be respected in some cultures, therefore may not be deemed credible or taken seriously by the student and/or their parents.
Faith: Christian
I could be unknowingly biased due to my beliefs and values. Need to maintain awareness of my values and beliefs when counseling, particularly when counseling individuals with different beliefs and values from my own.
Can't assume all Christians hold the same beliefs and values as me
Life Experiences
I had a difficult childhood
Moved out of mom's house when a junior
Mom didnt like me anymore
Raised myself mentally
All these things enable me to empathisize with young girls more easily than young boys
I am quick to feel sorry for them when they tell me about a situation that was similar to mine growing up--I need to maintain my awareness of this. I also need to make sure that I am not depriving young boys of empathy.
Difference in counseling males and females
Questions
Role and function of the SC
Answer this question when describing leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change
Most pressing concerns
My biggest concern is maintaining ethics and confidentiality during issues that are on the borderline of being necessary to breach confidentiality. e.g, self-harm, drugs, pregnancy
How have I grown and changed in this program
I have become more confident
Feel like it is the path God has chosen for me
I have become more open, understanding, and non judgmental
I have become more laid back-able to go with the flow
Most important thing I have learned so far
Listening and be there for the kids and school staff is the most important. I get caught up in the theories and counseling skills and stressed that I am not implementing these right. However, the ot important thing is that I am there fore these kids supporting them and listening to them when they need it
Learned that relationships with my school staff is key and imperative to best help the students
