Eyeball anatomy (
Organized in 3 basic layers
,
Ciliary body: epithelium, stroma, and muscle; makes force to focus the lens, secretes aqueous humor, and other things,
Iridocorneal angle
,
conjunctiva: mucous membrane, outermost layer of sclera anteriorly, has epithelium and connective tissue, makes mucous part of tears, has immune cells,
Posterior chamber: between the iris and lens, has aqueous humour in it that then flows to anterior chamber,
Lens zonules: ligament that connects ciliary body muscles to the lens; arise from pars plana region,
Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE): part of the retina; monolayer of cuboidal/columnar epithelial cells; has many many functions,
Subarachnoid space: between the arachnoid mater and pia mater which are 2 of the meninges layers surrounding the brain and optic nerve; filled with cerebrospinal fluid; ends at the posterior surface of the sclera; central retinal arteries and veins must cross this space,
dura mater: surrounds the optic nerve, continuous with the sclera,
lamina cribrosa: sieve-like mesh of collagen fiber bundles which is continuous with, axons of ganglion cells pass through here beyond which they are myelinated
,
rectus muscle tendon and belly: tendon inserts into the sclera about 4-8 mm behind the limbus,
ora serrata: jagged junction where ciliary epithelium sharply transitions to the retina; posterior to ciliary body,
Cloquet's canal: aka hyaloid canal, fluid-filled canal which is part of the vitreous)
