A Coggle Diagram about 2C. Fatherhood
(Jairus would have know that it was beneath his station to kneel at the feet of an itinerant even one reputed to be a prophet. He also would have known about the growing conflict between Jesus and the pharisees, and that in the future he might be called on to join the campaign against Jesus. So he set aside any concerns about his position and status. like the sinful woman who washed jesus feet with her hair, and like the woman with a bleeding problem, Jairus ended up o the ground in front of Jesus . He too was desperate. He was about to lose his daughter, and his daughter was everything to him.
, What does it mean to be a good father. I can only speak from my own experience. My wife and I have planned our entire lives around our daughter. When she got into U of O we moved to a condo in Lowertown to save transportation time - that is part of the reason that we go to this church. Career is important, but the particular job I have and how fast my career advances isn't nearly as important as being there for my daughter. From what I can tell this means driving a car, keeping the wallet handy but also listening, which for me is difficult.
, To understand what Jairus did it is important to remember that in terms of his job and social class he was associated with the Pharisees, who had decided that Jesus was a threat and that they were going to oppose him using every means at their disposal . In Luke 13:14 when Jesus heals a woman crippled for 18 years, a leader of the synagogue says "there are six days to do work" - healing was considered work
and Jairus is not as compelling a figure as the woman healed from bleeding or the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. How many messages have you heard about jairus. Did Jairus make it into many medieval paintings. But this is Fathers Day and I am giving the homily, so I am dedicating the message to Jairus. He did what was necessary for his family.
), 2B. Family
(In the case of Jairus daughter Jesus calls her child. This is because he was Jairus and Jarius wife child. Jesus miracle showed that not only did he have power over death, but he also had power to restore broken families. do you know of a broken family situation that none thinks can be fixed
, It has to do with how Jesus referred to the two. In the case of the woman he called her daughter. Not only was she to be reintegrated into the community, but in case her family was dead, Jesus made it clear that she was now part of the family of god.
and many people make the parallel about the 12 years and assume that the daughter of the synague ruler could have been hers. I don't think that is it, but there is something there. 12 years prior, great joy had come as a new member was added to Jairus family, while at the same time another woman was cut off from hers. But there is another parallel that has to do with family relations between the young woman raised from the dead and the woman with bleeding. Any idea what that would be?
), 2A. Faith
(woman troubled by bleeding luke 8:43-48
and Jairus daughter 8:40-42, 49-55
), I. Intro
(This sermon is about faith, family and fatherhood. What is faith? What is family? On the road to Jerusalem, Jesus stopped to teach people about these things. He wants to convert that in his new kingdom, faith and restored families matter more than ritual purity, which is the stock in trade of most religion. With regards to faith, Jesus encourages us to understand the power of the kingdom, that we can take a step of faith and do and receive greater things. With regards to family, Jesus makes it clear that he has the power to restore families, The story also has something to tell us about FATHERHOOD
and There are two stories here. There is the story of Jairus, whose reaches out to Jesus because his daughter has a serous illness. In the middle of that story is the story of a woman who reaches out to Jesus to be healed. I will also refer to the story of the sinful woman who washed Jesus feet with her hair that is found in Lk 7, but I won't have time to go into that.
