Prompt students to journal about facts, theories, ideas of what it takes to establish a successful civilization, like the Romans
Lecture
Provide students with general background knowledge about the Roman Empire an introduce video. Then pass out video worksheet/graphic organizer and tell students that this will be a tool they can refer back to later

Provide vocabulary sheet/ fact sheet which can be used as a guide so students are better prepared for lesson

Then discuss reasons given in the movie for the empire's decline

Students will watch the video and take notes regarding the rise and fall of the Roman Empire on the graphic organizer provided
Research
With the class notes and discussion points as a starting point, students will conduct further research in class and at home to explore the many reasons for the empires decline.
After video class will discuss what they learned in the film
Homework
After students have completed their research, assign an essay (for homework) that explains why the Roman Empire fell. Encourage students to take a clear position. The idea must be stated as the thesis and supported with documentation, and a strong conclusion should summarize the main ideas.
Use websites, references, worksheets, etc provided to complete task
Be prepared to share ideas and findings during the next class meeting with small groups
