Depending on age group may need to explain concept of quilt.
REFERENCING. Ask class to name famous american women in history and what they did to become famous.
1.1.2.D.2 ART AS LANGUAGE... Explain Project: Going to be researching famous women in American history. Each student will be illustrating a square for a quilt (inspired by the woman they chose). The finished quilt will display each students work.
1.3.P.D.5 DEMONSTRATE PLANNING AS PART OF CREATIVE PROCESS (RESEARCHING). Have students research and find a woman they would like to do their project on.
Make a list on board for class to reference.
Show students websites to use for research. Review the information they are finding.
ORGANIZING IDEAS. Have students write down 3 facts to include on their quilt square.
1.1.12.D.2 USING HISTORY AS STIMULI FOR ARTWORK (CREATING, DEVELOPING WORK). also, 1.3.P.D.2 EXPLORE COLOR, LINE, SHAPE TEXTURE (ELEMENTS OF ART) Using template, have students design their squares. Using facts and images.
Teacher: Create template for square on computer, for students use.
1.1.8.D.1 ART AS LANGUAGE (CONVEY MEANING THROUGH ARTWORK/PRESENTATION):Have students print and trim their square. Ready to present final product.
Teacher collect attach squares.
1.1.5.D.2 COMPARE AND CONTRAST IDEAS (RESPONDING, INTERPRET MEANING, EVALUATE. SHARE IDEAS AND OPINIONS). Display quilt, discuss information.
WORK TOGETHER. Make quilt.
Give class a list of sites to use for researching.
Show them an example square to guide them towards being consise and organized.
Allow the option of coloring the block after printing if students prefer to do artwork off the computer.
