They are inserts solely into radius all innervated by the radial nerve or its branches. More than half of the posterior compartment muscles arise from a common extensor origin tendon attached to the posterior surface of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and adjacent fascia. The extensor tendons are held in place at the posterior aspect of the hand by the extensor retinaculum, which prevents \"bowstringing\" of these tendons when the wrist hyperextended.
